TUMURTIIN OVOO ZINC MINE – SITE FOR THE FIELD TRIP VISIT UNDER “DISCOVER MONGOLIA-2005” MINING INVESTORS FORUM

The Tumurtiin Ovoo zinc deposit rests 13 km northeastward of Baruun Urt, the center of Sukhbaatar province in eastern Mongolia . It was calculated in 1980 that the deposit possesses 70572.29 thousand tons of ore with average grade of 13.67% of zinc by B+C reserve category which is equivalent to 1 034.86 thousand tons of metallic zinc.

In 1997 a Mongolian company “Metallimpex LLC” and China-based NFC entered into a Cooperation Agreement to jointly mine the deposit and established Tsairtmineral LLC, a Mongol-Chinese Joint Venture.

In 1999 Tsairtmineral LLC developed the technical feasibility study on the deposit and completed the detailed engineering and construction schemes. This was followed by the commencement of construction of the zinc mine with capacity to mine annually 300 thousand tons of zinc ore and produce 70 thousand tons of 50% zinc concentrate.

NFC and Tsairtmineral LLC established in July 2002 an Agreement to construct the Tumurtiin Ovoo zinc mine, upon which NFC was to build the mine upon a “Key Turn-In” condition.

The total investment of 45 million USD needed for the project was made available as a concessional loan of the Government of PRC to Mongolia through the two countries’ intergovernmental talks. In addition, the NFC was able to obtain loans and credits to fully resolve the required investment injections. Until the credits are paid back, the Mongolian part holds 49% of the project and the Chinese side retains 51%, and upon loan repayment, the two parties shall hold 50% each.

In 1998 Tsairtmineral LLC entered into a Stability Agreement with the Government of Mongolia.

The mine shall be fed by 110/10 kW substation at the deposit site, which branches out through a “T” connection from Choibalsan-Baruun Urt 110 kV high voltage electricity transmission line.

The company explored for the nearest water supply and discovered Shene Us water deposit in Asgat soum of Sukhbaatar province. Water shall be supplied to the mine through a 32-km long pipe.

Produced zinc concentrates shall be exported via auto- and railroads.
